These lighthouses represent the first five in the series, with many more to come! Kilauea Point, on the island of Kauai to the furthest reaches of the Florida Keys at Dry Tortugas National Park, From the shores of Maine at Acadia National Park to the rugged California coast and Point Reyes National Seashore these lighthouses represent so much of America's history! Lighthouses are designed to emit light from a system of lamps and lenses and to serve as a navigational aid for maritime pilots at sea or on inland waterways. Lighthouses mark dangerous coastlines, hazardous shoals, reefs, rocks and safe entries to harbors; they also assist in aerial navigation. Once widely used, the number of operational lighthouses has declined due to the expense of maintenance and use of electronic navigational systems.
Photographer and graphic artist, Robert B. Decker, studied photography with Ansel Adams in the summer of 1979 in Yosemite National Park when he was just 19…an experience that solidified his love of photography and our National Parks. Now he is on a journey to photograph and create iconic WPA-style posters of all our major national parks as we look forward to the next 100 years of the National Park Service.
