About Assateague Island National Seashore
Established in 1965, Assateague Island National Seashore protects the barrier island located off the coasts of Maryland and Virginia. The national seashore is known for its unspoiled beaches, stunning natural beauty, and unique wildlife.
One of the most notable features of Assateague Island National Seashore is its population of wild horses. These horses are believed to be descendants of domestic horses that were brought to the island by early settlers and have been living on the island for centuries.
In addition to the wild horses, Assateague Island National Seashore is home to a variety of other wildlife, including migratory birds, sea turtles, and other marine animals. Visitors can explore the park's many hiking trails, go kayaking or canoeing, or simply enjoy the beautiful beaches and crystal-clear waters.
